Q. What courses have you designed?
A. (in order of production) Shainin Fairways (V2.1), Shainin Dunes (V1.2),
Shainin Links (V1.1), Thunder Cove, Shainin Xtreme, Shainin Putt Putt, Naishoubanashi
Kusabana
Q. Do you have any courses in progress?
A. I always have courses in progress (about 4 right now). The real question
is how much am I working on them -- which always varies. My goal is getting
at least 4 courses out per year. Expect at least 2 more out this year (2001).
Q. What inspires you to design courses?
A. It is a lot of fun, once you learn the basics of using the course architect
tools. Each time I design a course, I learn a new techinique or new idea for
making a hole, which is exciting. I haven't made a real course yet, but making
fictional courses is a lot of fun, because you can create holes which either
can't or don't exist in real life, and see how they would play out in a simulation
game.
Q. What is your favorite course to play on Tiger Woods?
A. Badlands
Q. Who is your favorite online course architect (besides yourself)?
A. I don't get to download many courses online (don't have a cable connection...yet),
so I haven't played a lot of courses by the many great designers out there.
However, designers I like so far from the courses I've played have to be Steve
Smooth, Big Al Wesner, K.F. Baker, Notapro, Andy Chandra...
Q. Do you also play the game or just design courses?
A. Played the EA Sports Internet Tour, play with my dad online.
Q. When you play, do you use 3 click or Pro Swing?
A. 3 click only
Q. What is your average score when you play?
A. Wow, that really varies. My best score is -11 (TPC @ Prestancia) playing
Tiger 2001, while +10 is a good score for me at Naishoubanashi Kusabana. It
all depends on the course (and how I'm swinging for the round, of course).
Q. Do you play Tiger Woods online?
A. I mostly play online, as opposed to not online.
Q. How would others contact you for a game (icq, aol, msn, email, yahoo)?
A. Email
Q. What is your idea of a great course?
A. One which is tough, but fair. Hole locations on slopes that don't allow
the ball to stop near the hole are probably unfair, but greens which have
a lot of slope are fun, as long as hole locations are accessible. Holes with
options are great -- one option being safe, but making really low scoring
improbable; another option being risky, with a reward being a low score, and
a punishment being bogey or much, much worse. Scenary is obviously nice, and
adds to the value of a course, but I normally pay more attention to playability
and challenge level when playing/making a course.
Q. Have you designed courses for other games?
A. No
Q. Have you received any honors/awards for your courses?
A. The 2000 EA Sports Course Architect Challenge, 2nd place, Best Environmental
Design.
Q. Do you have a website?
A. Absolutely, http://www.JoshShainin.com
Q. What is your opinion on what designers could do to improve their courses?
A. There are a lot of great designers out there doing a great job...no complaints
here.
