Judge Michael E.
Vigil is the Democratic nominee for New Mexico Supreme Court
Justice in the 2016 General Election. He is currently the Chief Judge of the New
Mexico Court of Appeals, on which he has served since 2003. He is also a member of
the Chief Judges Council and the Budget Committee for the New Mexico Courts.
Judge Vigil has twice been recommended as qualified for the NM Supreme Court by
the bi-partisan Appellate Judges Nominating Commission – most recently in 2015
for this current position. Judge Vigil has written over 1,000 appellate opinions as a
Court of Appeals Judge, and he has sat on over 3,000 appellate cases. He is an
elected member of the prestigious American Law Institute.
Judge Vigil was a New Mexico attorney for 27 years before appointment to the Court
of Appeals, and was appellate counsel in over 50 precedent-setting, published cases.
He appeared in every judicial district in New Mexico in jury and non-jury trials in
civil and criminal cases. These included personal injury, domestic relations,
children’s court, zoning, commercial law, medical malpractice, construction,
condemnation, libel, securities, and insurance, among others.
Judge Vigil is a member of the New Mexico Sentencing Commission and received the
“Native Hispanic Hero Award” from the NM House of Representatives. He has served
on many Supreme Court and Court of Appeals committees, judicial nominating
commissions, and participated in law enforcement graduations, as well as several
continuing legal education seminars. Judge Vigil graduated from Santa Fe High
School, the College of Santa Fe summa cum laude, and received his law degree from
Georgetown University, where he was an Editor of the Georgetown Law Journal.
The November General Election will be held on November 8, 2016. Any registered
voter in the state of New Mexico can vote in the General Election.
